Prunus pumila is a low-growing cherry shrub that is native to North America. The fruit is edible and reported to be quite good, although I have not tried it myself yet. From pictures the fruit sets look a lot like sand cherry’s cousin aronia.

It is native to sandy, rocky, and acidic environments like where wild blueberries grow. I do have it growing well in a clay soil, so it seems to be fairly versatile. It is low growing, so needs to be maintained by weeding around it, or grown in such unfertile soil that competition is severely diminished!

I am just getting to know this cool plant, and looking forward to trying the fruit as soon as I can. I got a plant from a friend and it grew very well this year, so I have some nice layers to share!
